This story entails James McBride's upbringing in his family of 12 brothers and sisters (him being #8), and his curiosity and drive to find out where his white mother came from and who she is. He would ask a variety of questions to his mother, trying to understand his life, but received answers that were very vague or sarcastic, and definitely evasive.
