It's way more convenient to roll the thing around than to carry a laundry basket from room to room. The handle placement makes it easy to lift up and carry when necessary (e.g. up and down stairs). And you can also wheel other things around on/in it... it's the right size to support a laptop or a food tray, in a pinch. Or other things like a plate rack or something.
