S. (Samuel) Dalpe 1800’s Signed Lg Wood Plane 🐞

S. (Samuel)Dalpe (1828-1894) signed large 1800’s wood plane. Engraved on the plane “S. Dalpe Roxton Pond” in the area as shown by the red arrow on the green paper. Sam Dalpe manufactured planes from 1865 until his death in 1894. Samuel Dalpe was one of the first documented plane maker’s in Roxton Pond, Quebec, Canada. He was born in St. Marc sur Richelieu, Quebec. His father Joseph was also a carpenter. Samuel learned his trade in plane making in Troy, New York with a Carter plane maker thanks to a failed revolution in Quebec in 1837. His father Joseph participated in the rebellion so the family fled to New York State to escape “troubles.” A plaque was mounted in 1974 at Roxton Pond celebrating more than 100 years of plane making. This plane is an amazing piece of Canadian history and is especially special given the engraving of the maker’s name and location. Good condition considering the age. Any wear commensurates with the age. Approximately 3” in depth, 24” in length and 3” tall.
