This is Steve Burrows' A Shimmer of Hummingbirds, a Birders Murder Mystery novel. It's the first Bird Hunter mystery. Published in 2015, it won an Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. It's set in the stunning six continents, with some time spent in the remote coasts of Nova Scotia.
