This is a vintage pencil that can attach to a brooch. It's circular with engraved concentric rings. Most commonly used from the early 1900’s to the late 1930’s by women for filling out their dance card The back has a pin mechanism for attaching it to clothing. It's made in the USA. The selected item is a vintage Ketcham & McDougall gold-tone retractable mechanical pencil brooch/pin (often called a nurse's or secretary's chatelaine pencil pin), featuring a small linked chain connecting the pencil to a circular locking pin back with a decorative top.Design: A slender gold-tone metal mechanical pencil with a white/pearl-like terminal top, attached via a short linked chain to a round, textured brooch pin back.Function: The chain allows the wearer to pull and use the retractable pencil while it remains safely pinned to a uniform or lapel.Maker: Commonly manufactured by vintage novelty jewelry companies such as Ketcham & McDougall (K&McD) out of Roseland, New Jersey.
