Crafts of Canada Ceramic Pottery Bowl by Art & Judy Morris
$35
Vintage Canadian Studio Pottery Bowl by A.J. Crafts (Art & Judy Morris)
Up for sale is a beautiful, authentic piece of mid-to-late 20th-century Canadian studio pottery. This wheel-thrown stoneware bowl features a rustic, textured aesthetic with a lovely speckled clay body. The exterior is decorated with fluid, hand-painted geometric glaze stripes in warm earthy tones (soft pink/berry and muted yellow) over an ivory base.
The interior features a fascinating olive-green hue blooming near the bottom—a natural result of copper glaze bleeding from the kiln firing, which adds incredible artisan character to the piece. Because of its deep, rounded shape, this piece is highly reminiscent of a Japanese chawan (matcha tea bowl) or a rustic café au lait bowl.
About the Artists
This piece was handcrafted by A.J. Crafts, a renowned studio partnership run by artisans Art and Judy Morris out of Pembroke, Ontario, Canada. Known for their functional art pottery, the duo specialized in heavy stoneware that combined traditional utility with experimental, fluid glaze designs. Pieces from their Pembroke workshop are wonderful examples of classic Canadian studio pottery.
