This beautiful Japanese handmade and painted wood sosaku creative kokeshi doll is from the 1970's. She measures 8" tall and 8.75" in circumference around her head. She was designed by beloved kokeshi doll maker - MIYASHITA Hajime (宮下 はじめ, 1940 - 2006 retired) - who has won the "Prime Minister's Award - Artist" in Japan for his outstanding kokeshi creations, including one specifically for this doll. Her name is "Hanayome" which translates to "Bride". She is wearing a gorgeous wedding day kimono and a special wedding day hair piece. Her outstanding kimono is decorated with chrysanthemum petals and cranes, both of which symbolize happiness, good fortune and longevity. Cranes are frequently woven into traditional wedding kimonos. And her traditional wedding hair piece is quite beautiful, with her hair and top knot poking through the top. Her soft, gentle facial features are so beautiful with pink cheeks and long eyelashes on closed eyes - perhaps she's dreaming or praying! Each detail is meticulously hand- painted, showcasing Miyashita's skill in capturing traditional Japanese beauty. There is a label with Japanese text on the bottom. The translated text states "Prime Minister's Award Winning Artist Miyashita Hajime works" This kokeshi doll is not only a delightful piece of Japanese craftsmanship but also a perfect addition to any collection, adding a subtle elegance to your space.
