Aikenhead's Hardware 1830-1970 One Penny

This old big penny, a symbol of thrift and care in family expenditures, is one of the last to be struck by Britain's Royal Mint. Similar coins were used in Canada 140 years ago when Aikenhead's Hardware was founded in Toronto, then called York, and Canadian business was done in pounds, shillings, and pence. Canada switched to dollars and cents in 1857. In February 1971, Britain will also adopt a decimal currency system. The big penny will be withdrawn from circulation and replaced by a new and smaller one about the size of a Canadian quarter!!! Please check my other items!!!
