The RMS Empress of Britain was an Ocean Liner built between 1928 and 1931 by John Brown Shipyard in Scotland, and owned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company.
In her time she was the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ship between England and Canada.
The ship traveled as a Ocean Liner carrying passengers from England to Quebec from 1931 to 1939 through the Panama Canal.
Her primary role was to entice passengers between England and Quebec instead of the more popular Southampton–New York route.
The ship was designed to carry 1,195 passengers (465 first class, 260 tourist class and 470 third class.)
At 760.8 ft (231.9 m) and 42,348 Gross Registered Tonnage.
Her size was kept small enough to use the Panama and Suez canals.
With four propellers, her speed during trials was 25.271 kn (46.802 km/h), making her the fastest ship from England to Canada at that time.
On 2 September 1939, one day before the United Kingdom declared war (seven days before Canada entered World War 2), the Empress of Britain sailed on her last voyage for Canadian Pacific, with the largest passenger list in her history.
Arriving in Quebec on September 8th, 1939.
Upon arrival, the ship was repainted grey and then laid up awaiting orders.
Then on November 25th, 1939,
The Empress of Britain was requisitioned as a troop transport.
Transporting equipment and personal for the
War effort.
The Empress of Britain served as a ship for the War effort from November 25th, 1939 until October 28th 1940 when it was sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Ireland.
It is believed that my wife's Grandmother took a vacation to England sometime between 1931 and 1939, and acquired this Passenger Brochure while sailing on the vessel.
Then my wife's grandmother put the brochure behind Glass in this vintage Wooden Frame to enjoy.
When the frame was opened to be cleaned.
We took pictures of the back of the brochure which talks about the Panama Canal, and advertises the Entrance to the Hotel Cristobal in Panama.
