Priced at €54.95 ($88.97 in CAD) this black-and-white photo with a single red element (the bike) has sold nearly half a million copies worldwide. ✨️This was photographed by Fernando Bengoechea, an Argentine-Swedish photographer, and captures a scene near the intersection of Brouwersgracht and Herengracht. The image gained iconic status, even inspiring a short documentary titled Vilshult: An Amsterdam Picture from IKEA (2018), which reveals the emotional story behind the photo. ✨️Tragically, Fernando Bengoechea died in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami while vacationing in Sri Lanka with his partner, designer Nate Berkus. The disaster occurred on December 26, 2004. Berkus survived by clinging to a roof, but Bengoechea was swept away by the waves and his body was never found.
