Garry Wayne Thurber “In the Kelp” (1994) Soapstone Sculpture
$595
Original hand-carved soapstone sculpture titled “In the Kelp”, created by Canadian sculptor Garry Wayne Thurber (G.W. Thurber) and dated 1994.
The underside is inscribed: “In the Kelp” G.W. Thurber S.S.I. ’94 (“S.S.I.” referring to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, where Thurber lived and worked.)
The sculpture beautifully depicts a stylized marine fish surrounded by flowing kelp and organic forms carved from a single piece of green soapstone.
The intricate openwork and fluid composition are characteristic of Thurber’s Pacific Northwest coastal themes.
Garry Wayne Thurber was a respected Canadian sculptor whose work focused on marine life, mythology, and West Coast imagery.
His sculptures have been exhibited publicly and are represented in museum collections.
Condition:
Overall the sculpture displays beautifully. The sculpture itself appears structurally sound.
It has separated from its original hardwood display base at the old adhesive joint, but the stone itself does not appear cracked.
A new owner may wish to reattach it to the base using an appropriate conservation-quality epoxy if desired.
There are also minor signs of age and handling consistent with a hand-carved soapstone sculpture from the 1990s.
Approximate age:
1994
Material:
* Hand-carved soapstone
* Original hardwood display base
A wonderful opportunity to own an original piece of Canadian West Coast studio sculpture by a recognized Salt Spring Island artist.
