British five new pence coin (5p) 🧡
$35
This is a British five new pence coin (5p). This large-sized cupro-nickel coin was part of the United Kingdom's transition to decimal currency, first introduced in 1968 to circulate alongside the existing one shilling coin.
Design and Specifications
Reverse Design: The design, by Christopher Ironside, features the Badge of Scotland: a thistle royally crowned, with the numeral 5 below and the words NEW PENCE above.
Obverse Design: The other side of the coin (not pictured) would feature the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin.
Composition & Size: The coin is made of a copper-nickel alloy (75% Cu, 25% Ni), has a diameter of 23.59 mm, and weighs 5.65 g.
Demonetization: This larger version of the 5p coin was withdrawn from circulation and demonetized on December 31, 1990, when a smaller 18 mm version was introduced. The current 5p coins are made of nickel-plated steel.
