Mid-Century Art Portrait on Velvet – Signed & Attributed

Original mid-century art portrait depicting an elderly East Asian scholar or sage, hand-executed on black velvet. The work features a contemplative expression, elongated white beard, and flowing robe, rendered in soft pastel-like pigments typical of velvet painting techniques popular in North America during the post-war period. The artwork is signed on the front with decorative gold pseudo-calligraphy and is clearly attributed on the back with a handwritten note: “Painted by Betty Caswell, Crescent, Alta.” This confirms the piece as an authentic regional Alberta folk artwork rather than a later decorative reproduction. Presented in its original vintage wooden frame with original glass and backing. The velvet surface gives the portrait strong depth and contrast, making it a striking decorative and collectible example of mid-century Canadian community art, well suited for collectors of folk art, velvet paintings, or period interior décor.
