This piece brilliantly showcases Cobiness's masterful, minimalist approach to the Woodland Art movement. Departing from thick black outlines, Cobiness utilizes fluid, sweeping, naturalistic brush lines and muted earth tones to capture the elegant movement of two shorebirds. Close inspection of the ink layer reveals the authentic, distinct texture of manual hand-screen printing rather than mass-mechanical lithographic dot matrices. The reverse side of the frame acts as an incredible historical time capsule. It retains the original, complete typed biographical label detailing Cobiness’s upbringing at the Buffalo Point Reserve in Manitoba and the evolution of his style. Additionally, it bears the official framing label from Toronto’s historic Gallery Boutique on Yonge Street, confirming its period-authentic framing and preservation. Condition Report Excellent Vintage Condition. The print is cleanly preserved behind glass with no evidence of moisture damage, staining, fading, or foxing. The paper remains bright. The era-specific metal frame is structurally sound with minor surface wear consistent with age. Fully sealed with original gallery labels and an early collector's secondary price sticker intact on the reverse. Not examined out of frame to preserve historical gallery backing integrity. About the Artist: Eddy Cobiness (1933–1996) Eddy Cobiness was a highly influential Indigenous Canadian artist of Ojibwe descent. Raised on the Buffalo Point Reserve in southeastern Manitoba, he began sketching the natural world around him during his youth. Cobiness achieved significant national and international acclaim for his flowing, abstract ink and watercolor depictions of local wildlife and communities. In 1973, alongside legendary artists Jackson Beardy, Alex Janvier, Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Carl Ray, and Joseph Sanchez, Cobiness co-founded the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. This historic collective broke systemic barriers, fought for the independence of Indigenous artists, and forever elevated Woodland and Native Canadian art into the mainstream global art market.
