This piece was included in the 1972 Portfolio “Colour Drawings by Fifteen Cape Dorset Artists” produced by the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative Ltd.
Kakulu Saggiatuk (1940-2020) was a renowned Inuit graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, known for her imaginative, playful, and often transformative depictions of birds, seals and beluga whales. She was a prominent figure in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collections since 1966, utilizing stonecut, lithography and drawing to explore traditional Inuit spirituality.
Kakulu was born on a Hudson’s Bay Company ship Nascopie in 1940, she was part of a creative family; her mother was a graphic artist and her brother, Qavaroak Tunnille, was a noted sculptor.
Kakulu’s works have been showcased internationally, including at the National Gallery of Canada. Her works are held in major collections, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Amon Carter Museum of America Art. Her works have been offered at auctions multiple times.
Good condition considering the age. Any wear commensurates with the age.
