Clemence Wescoupe was Saulteaux (a branch of the Ojibwa First Nations). He was self-taught, started painting around 1971; Later (mid-1970s) began printmaking—silkscreens, lithographs, etc; His subject matter: Ojibwa legends, animal spirits (wolves, birds like kingfisher, swan, thunderbird, etc.), “mother and child,” and broadly spiritual/nature themes;Style: Flowing, elegant lines; use of negative space; stylized forms; strong links to the Woodland School of First Nations art. Prints is named "Home Ward Bound".
