Vintage Chinese Silk Embroidery – Framed Peacock & Peony Textile Art
Up for auction is a beautifully detailed vintage Chinese hand-embroidered silk textile panel featuring a classic "Bird and Flower" (花鸟) motif. The artwork depicts a pair of vibrant, intricately stitched peacocks perched on a blossoming tree branch surrounded by elegant peonies.
In traditional Chinese culture, the peacock signifies beauty, dignity, and high status, while the blooming peonies represent honor and wealth. The upper right corner features hand-painted black ink calligraphy reading "花开富贵" (Huā kāi fù guì), a classic blessing that translates to "When the flowers bloom, prosperity and wealth follow."
The piece features a fascinating piece of local Canadian history. It is housed in a repurposed mid-century frame previously owned by Montreal-area artist/collector Ingeborg Hiscox of Pointe-Claire, Quebec (as evidenced by the vintage typewriter labels remaining on the reverse cardboard backing, which originally housed a linocut print).
