Lot 88 New Vintage Milk Cream Bottle Cap Tokens
$15
This weeks out of the box artifact is a paper milk bottle cap.
These milk caps were placed in the upper neck of glass milk bottles acting as a sealer and helping keep the milk fresh. The little pullable tabs were held in place with a staple, and the user would pull on that to remove them from the bottle. The caps would be used once and then discarded, while the jar would be reused. Early caps did not have a little tab to lift the cap out and would be pried out with either a knife or a special tool called a pick.
It wasn’t until the late 1960s that Canada started to move away from glass bottles for milk (although we still do have glass jars, they just aren’t as common). Originally these jars were replaced with bags, as these bags could be inexpensively adjusted based on different measurements (especially at a time when Canada was introducing the Metric system). By the 1980s most of us in Western Canada moved to milk jugs rather than bags.
A fun thought about the milk tops: Children would play games with the milk tops, where the tops would be thrown to the ground and those that fell with the printed side on top would win. If you are old enough to remember pogs, that’s what it became. As designs became more complicated, and targeted more towards children, pogs were born!
