End of Day Spatter Glass Bud Vase
This is a hand-blown art glass bud vase featuring a squat bulbous body that rises to a slender, flared neck and flat rim. The glass exhibits an opaque white ground adorned with vertical combed or spattered streaks of rust and orange.
Vases of this spatter or tortoiseshell style were produced by various European glasshouses during the late 19th and throughout the 20th century, particularly in Bohemia, Britain, and the island of Murano in Italy. Often referred to colloquially as 'end-of-day' glass, the technique involved rolling a core of gather glass over chips of mixed colored glass (frit) to create speckled or dragged patterns. These decorative bud vases were popular retail giftware items and are widely collected today as accessible examples of colorful vintage art glass.
