Vintage 1930s Japanese Moriage Porcelain Plate - Hand-Painted Kannon & Immortals - Woven Rattan Rim - Pre-War Export
Up for auction is a beautiful, authentic vintage Japanese Moriage porcelain cabinet plate, dating back to the 1930s (Taisho to early Showa era).
The front of the plate features an exquisitely detailed, hand-painted scene depicting Kannon (the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy) flanked by two Immortals (Arhats). The entire piece is decorated using the traditional Moriage technique, showcasing heavy, raised-enamel detailing and intricate gold linework. The reverse features the classic, hand-painted red "MADE IN JAPAN" export mark characteristic of the pre-WWII era.
The plate is housed in its original hand-woven rattan/bamboo basket rim and still includes its vintage spring-loaded wire wall hanger.
Condition Report
• Porcelain Artwork (Front): Excellent / Near-Mint. The raised Moriage enamel, delicate dotting, and gold leaf outlining are remarkably well-preserved with zero notable flaking, rubbing, or paint loss. The colors remain incredibly vibrant.
• Porcelain Base: There are no cracks or hairlines extending through the body. Please note: There is a small flea-bite chip on the bottom edge of the white porcelain rim (see close-up photos). This is completely hidden from view when looking at the plate from the front.
• Rattan/Wicker Rim: Fair / Distressed Condition. The woven frame is brittle due to its 90+ year age. It shows noticeable splitting, warping, and a few broken support bands on the back. It is currently intact and safely cradles the plate for display, but it should be handled with care.
