Stands on its own, comes with baby support cushion so baby floats and is protected in the water, the cushion is washed just stained from a spaghetti disaster. The cushion is interchangeable however so you can replace it. My baby is 10 months and too big for it. I'd say best between newborn to 10 months depending on baby's length and weight.
