Female Figurative Wooden Sculpture, Vintage Cuban Modernism

This striking piece is a vintage Cuban modernist female figurative wood sculpture, hand-carved out of dense native hardwoods like Guayacán (lignum vitae), Granadillo, or Caoba (Cuban Mahogany). The sculpture highlights a gorgeous, natural two-tone effect. Carvers deliberately utilize both the dark inner heartwood and the lighter outer sapwood of the tree branch to give the figure its distinct, contrasting contours. The piece follows an elegant, abstract, and highly elongated silhouette that is deeply characteristic of Afro-Cuban folk and mid-century tourist art. The stylized facial features, head wrap, and exaggerated proportions draw a heavy visual influence from West African carving traditions blended with modern Caribbean forms.
