This specific model, featuring a young boy in a white nightshirt on a black base, was originally issued in 1944 and remained in production until 1997. The "Darling" model holds a significant place in the brand's history, as the original version (HN 1) was given the first-ever HN number after Queen Mary reportedly saw the design and exclaimed, "Isn't he a darling!".
Understanding the Markings
HN 1985: This is the unique identification number for this specific model. "HN" refers to Harry Nixon, who headed the figurine painting department when this system was introduced in 1913.
COPR. 1945: This stands for "Copyright 1945," indicating when the design was officially copyrighted, rather than necessarily the year your specific piece was manufactured.
Royal Doulton Backstamp: The "Lion and Crown" mark seen here was used throughout most of the 20th century. The inclusion of "Bone China" and "Made in England" signifies a mid-to-late 20th-century production date.
Doulton & Co. Limited: Was the company's official name used on marks between 1945 and 1959.
