Yab Yum Statue

A yab-yum statue is a common feature in the Buddhist art of Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan, depicting a male deity in an embrace with his female consort. The image, which literally means "father-mother," symbolizes the primordial union of wisdom and compassion necessary to achieve enlightenment. Symbolism The yab-yum statue holds deep, esoteric meaning within Tantric Buddhism and is not meant for public display without proper understanding. Male deity: Represents upaya (skillful means or compassion), which is the active, masculine force. Female consort: Represents prajna (wisdom or insight), which is the passive, feminine force. The embrace: The union of the two figures symbolizes the non-dualistic state that an enlightened being must achieve. It overcomes the false separation between the self and the world.
