At the age of 14, he entered the famous San Oras Monastery where he studied art for two years while learning the secrets of the art. In 1943, during World War II, tragedy fell upon Mr. Greco: he and his father were captured by the Germans. While they waited to be taken to a prison camp, a German General observed John drawing his automobile. He was so impressed by the sketch that he released John and his father and gave them permission to return home. At 16 years of age, Mr. Greco had become Greece's national champion of the 100 and 200 metre track and field events and was a member of the 4x100 metre relay team. He also competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome (4x100). His racing career took him through Europe, the Middle East, and Egypt. After spending three years in Cyprus, also known as the island of Venus, John travelled to many countries, capturing their natural beauty on canvas. Mr. Greco first displayed his art in Athens (from 1958-1960) and then in Capri, Italy (in 1963). Since arriving in North America in 1967, John has continued to do what he does best: painting the natural beauty of this vast continent. Since 1969, he has been featuring the Rocky Mountains throughout Canada and the U.S.A. From 1969 to 1971, he exhibited his art in Victoria, British Columbia. From 1973 to 1979. his art was featured in San Francisco, California at the Tanforan Mall Art Gallery. From 1979 to 1982, his art was sold at the Southland Mall Gallery in Hayward, California. Throughout the years, John Greco has exhibited his art in Vancouver, Prince George, Jasper, Lake Louise, Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, and once in Detroit at the Sun Mall. For many years, John spent his time from May to September at the Cascade Souvenir & Gift Shop in Banff, Alberta, where you can still see many of his paintings that capture the beauty of the Rockies.
