Antique Swiss Brienz-Style Wilhelm Tell Hand-Carved Sculpture

A beautiful and highly detailed antique hand-carved wooden sculpture depicting Wilhelm Tell and his son Walter (Walther), the legendary Swiss freedom fighter and national hero. Tell is portrayed carrying his crossbow over his shoulder while accompanied by his young son. The sculpture is carved with wonderful attention to detail, including the figures' facial features, clothing, footwear, crossbow and textured base. The front of the wooden base is prominently carved “Wilhelm Tell.” The carving is strongly reminiscent of the renowned Brienz (Brienzer) woodcarving tradition of Switzerland, which became especially celebrated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Comparable Wilhelm Tell carvings from Brienz are documented from around 1900. This particular piece is not signed or marked by a specific carver, so its exact maker, place of manufacture and precise date cannot be conclusively confirmed. It is therefore offered as a Swiss/Brienz-style carving, possibly early 20th century. Wilhelm Tell is one of Switzerland's most recognizable legendary figures. His story is traditionally associated with the year 1307 and became an enduring symbol of Swiss independence and resistance. The composition of Tell carrying his crossbow with his son is closely associated with the famous 1895 Wilhelm Tell monument in Altdorf by Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling. Family provenance: This piece came from a privately owned country home belonging to a Swiss family. According to the family, it had been inherited through the family from an earlier generation. While this family history cannot independently confirm the carving's exact origin or maker, it adds an interesting connection to its Swiss character and history. The sculpture measures approximately 14 inches tall. Condition: Overall good antique/vintage condition with beautiful age-related character and patina. Please note several imperfections, all photographed: there is a small chip/loss near the hand and crossbow area, a small nick to the wood near the leg, and a small repaired/glued area near the upper crossbow/shoulder area. The repair was done very well but can be noticed upon close inspection. The underside has a red velvety/non-slip material, which appears to be a later addition.
