Antique Japanese Satsuma covered urn or censer, lided jar sometimes referred to as a "Koro" . Dating from the Meiji period: late 19th to early 20th century . (1868–1912)
The piece features a Hand Painted cream-colored earthenware base decorated with Hand-painted floral and bird motifs, accented with heavy gilt (gold) highlights and moriage (raised enamel) details.
Key Features Form: A large, bulbous lidded vessel, sometimes referred to as a "Koro" (incense burner) or a temple jar.
Decorative Handles & Finial: The lid is topped with a foo dog (lion dog) finial, and the body is flanked by two large, gilded foo dog handles.
Design: The central panel depicts a traditional scene of flowers and birds, a common theme in High-quality Satsuma ware.
Base: It sits on a matching decorated stand or integrated footed base, which is also heavily gilded
Height : Approx. 40 cm - 16 inches
No chips or cracks, Excellent condition for age, some wear to gilt commensurate with age, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home and would make a superb statement piece ! It carries a history and charm that new items simply can't match.
