1 APPLE LUFFA PLANT LEFT!

Pick up close to 1246 Shaw St. Only 1 left! Grown for the first time a couple years ago as a novelty, and it was fun to see the vines grow, flower and produce huge luffa! Began growing from seed in February in Promix mycorrhizae soil on top of heat mats and full spectrum lights. When first true leaves appear, they were fertilized with worm castings and my homemade organic compost. They are healthy and starting to vine; some of them have buds and are flowering. This past week, they go outside during the day in partial shade to be hardened off, but are taken in before evening. Temperatures at night must be consistently double digits for them to thrive. Last year, I harvested the luffa gourds in October and November and collected the seeds. Luffa need a trellis to grow. Some people plant them to provide shade whilst enjoying the fruit. Can be eaten when young, but I let them grow big, harvest them, dry them and then cut them and use the luffa as natural scrubbers. Plant in a very sunny spot, cover the soil with a mulch of straw or even pinecones and water well; they are thirsty plants.
