Detailed Description
Up for auction is a magnificent example of mid-century modern Hungarian art pottery from the world-renowned Zsolnay Pécs factory. This striking 10.25-inch vase features the highly collectible, experimental snakeskin shrink-glaze finish.
The artisan technique involves layering an intense, vibrant red glaze over a warm gold-yellow luster base. When fired in the kiln, the top layer naturally pulls apart to create a highly tactile, dramatic crackle texture. The exterior finish beautifully contrasts with a smooth, matte celadon green/blue interior glaze lining the neck—a signature trait of authentic Zsolnay production from this era.
Its dramatic, elegant hourglass silhouette and fiery coloration make it a spectacular statement piece for any mid-century modern, Art Deco, or retro ceramic collection.
Condition Report
Glaze & Body: Excellent vintage condition. The red shrink-glaze retains its original high-gloss sheen. No structural cracks, repairs, or chips to the body.
Base / Maker's Mark: The bottom features the classic unglazed ceramic ring and an indented red center. As is very common with these heavy experimental glazes, the original gold or ink surface factory stamp has worn away over the decades from handling. The distinctive form, color palette, and dual-glaze style fully verify its authentic Zsolnay Pécs origin.
