The creator of the first Toby Mug is unknown, but most attribute it to either John Astbury or Thomas Wheildon. Nobody is quite sure where the name 'Toby' comes from, but suggestions include “Low Toby, an old word for a mugger, Sir Toby Belch from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or as a tribute to famous Yorkshire tippler Henry Elwes – nicknamed Toby Fillpot.
