#1 Antique lithograph print of the painting titled “Getting Out Without Paying” by the renowned Canadian-American artist Cornelius David Krieghoff. Signed and dated by the artist to the bottom right. Circa 1859 - Quebec. Note: The information on the dust cover is in French - following is the English translation: “Getting Out Without Paying- 1859. With mischievous gaiety, these villagers of the place gallop away past the attendant guarding the toll gate and narrowly avoid the first form of taxation.” Cornelius David Krieghoff (1815-1872) was a Dutch born Canadian-American painter of the 19th century. He is best known for his paintings of Canada, its people and traditions prior to Confederation. His popular images depict the activities and traditions of Indigenous peoples and French Canadian settlers in the mid 19th century. This lithograph is amazing in detail. The colours remain vivid. Good condition. Framed and matted. The original gold coloured frame has some wear which commensurates with the age. Art is approximately 11.5” wide 8” long.
