After completing his National Service, he formally trained at the prestigious Wimbledon School of Art (1960–1963) under Richard Bateson, one of the UK's last true surviving country traditional potters. Deeply influenced by the foundational philosophies of studio legends Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew, Owen dedicated his career to creating expertly crafted, functional everyday ware. In 1974, he established his famous independent studio, Crochendy Twrog Pottery, in Maentwrog, North Wales. There, he became a founding member of the Guild of North Wales Potters, specializing in wood-fired, reduced stoneware utilizing local organic materials like wood-ash from the Welsh countryside for his custom glazes. His exceptional pieces are widely collected and held in prestigious permanent archives, including the National Museum of Wales and the Aberystwyth University Ceramics Collection. This piece beautifully exemplifies the Leach-tradition ethos of merging high art with daily utility. It is thrown from a durable, earthy buff stoneware clay that features rich, dense iron speckling bursting through the glaze. The front of the container features a hand-applied, raised rectangular clay plaque stamped with the word "JAM" in prominent, vintage block lettering. The outer walls display crisp, tactile horizontal throwing ridges from the artisan’s fingers on the wheel. It features its original matching dome lid with a rounded knob handle and a custom-cut spoon notch. The raw, unglazed base shows authentic wire-cut release marks and bears a crisp imprint of Owen's official maker’s mark: a lowercase "t" enclosed in a square stamp.
