Historical Advertising & Marketing
Original Retail Price: Debuted at roughly $6.00 USD in the 1940s.
Campaign Focus: Marketed heavily to families and amateur hobbyists as an affordable, easy-to-use "reflex-style" camera that offered a large waist-level viewfinder for bright, simple composition.
Flash Promotion: Promoted alongside the attachable Brownie Flasholder, which allowed users to take simple indoor or low-light flashbulb photos by just pressing the standard shutter button.
Operating InstructionsLoading Film: Open the bottom latch, pull out the internal film holder, and load a roll of 127 film in subdued light.
Secure the backing paper tightly onto the take-up spool, slide the holder back into the Bakelite body, and lock it.
Advancing Film: Turn the winding knob on the bottom until the number "1" appears centered in the red viewing window on the back.
Setting Shutter: Use the small lever near the lens to select "I" for standard snapshots (approx. 1/30s–1/50s) or "B" for long exposures where the shutter stays open as long as the button is depressed.
Framing and Shooting: Open the top folding hood of the waist-level finder to compose your square \(1\frac{5}{8}\text{"} \times 1\frac{5}{8}\text{"}\) picture, then press the exposure button.
Advance the film immediately after each shot to avoid double exposures (unless a double exposure is desired).
