The fat PlayStation 2 can work but the ribbon cord that plugs in for the power in the inside of the PlayStation may be damaged or just unplugged. All you need is to open it up and see. The PlayStation 2 slim does function completely. The issue with this console is a visual effect that could be caused by a diode or the emotion engine malfunction. The image comes up all rainbowy but you can still see and hear the sounds from the console. To fix this console you have to be comfortable with soldering. The PlayStation 2 controller membrane for the R2 buttons snapped. Both consoles can come with power cords and AV cords.
