The street was officially renamed in June 2019 to honor the rapper's impact on the community and music. The renaming was spearheaded by LeRoy McCarthy, who said that honoring Biggie symbolizes more than just one man, but also a culture, borough, and people. The ceremony was attended by Biggie's mother, Voletta Wallace, his children, T'Yanna and Christopher Jr., and close friends and family. The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) also released a limited edition of hand-made signs to commemorate the street renaming. The signs were available for purchase online.
