East African Sculptural Wood Basin

Hand-carved from a single block of wood, this basin likely originates from East Africa, where vessels of this form were used in daily life for carrying, preparing, and serving. Its shape follows function: deeply hollowed, thick-walled, and balanced by small integrated handles. The carving is direct and unrefined in the best way, guided by hand, leaving behind a unique surface. Over time, the interior has developed a rich patina. The edges have softened through use, giving it a feeling of softness and wear. There is a sculptural presence to it now. Removed from its original context, it now holds a different purpose - one of grounding, of anchoring a space with beauty. Early 20th Century. Height: 10" Length: 31" Width: 21"
