NORMAL mode lets you use each hard drive as if it’s a separate drive. They will all appear on your desktop (on a Mac) or in file manager (on a PC) as separate drives with their own names. The fan sits up top, drawing air through vents in the bottom and the heat is expelled through the top of the enclosure. I never found it loud at all and always ran the fan high enough to keep things cool. The drives are easy to remove so the enclosure can be cleaned and dusted.
