Issued by the Royal Mint in 1983, almost 1,100 years after it became responsible for striking English coins, in 886AD. The 'Round Pound' replaced the £1 paper note, that typically lasted just 9 months, the brass/nickel £1 coin was designed and struck to last for 40 years. The design on the reverse of the coin is known as the 'Royal Arms'. It includes the Guardian lion to the left and the Scottish Unicorn to the right. Add to this the coin was minted in Llantrisant in South Wales. The front of the coin features HM Queen Elizabeth II. The coin measures 22mm or almost an inch in diameter. It weighs 9.5 Grams. In 2017 this round pound was replaced by the 12 sided one pound coin. On the 15th October 2017 the 'Round Pound' ceased to be legal tender and passed into antiquity. Now it has become a highly collectible coin. A wonderful if short piece of British history, a Proof condition coin to be kept for future generations to enjoy.
