Large vintage acrylic painting by First Nations Oji-Cree artist Mervin Meekis. Signed and dated by the artist to the bottom right. Circa 1986. Mervin Meekis was from the Sandy Lake Reserve and passed away in 2000. Meekis was an important cultural figure and in 1986 at a Joint Truth and Reconciliation gathering which involved the United Church of Canada, one of Meekis’s paintings titled “The Meeting of the Eagle and the Dove” was formally recognized. Meekis was presented to the 31st General Council 1986 during the consideration of the Apology to First Nations. This piece features the vibrant, bold outlines and symbolic imagery characteristic of the Anishinaabe Woodland School of Art style. It depicts a profile face integrated with a stylized eagle feather headdress against a striking red sun. Good condition. Framed and matted. Any wear commensurates with the age. Art is approximately 16” wide and 22” long. Frame is approximately 23” wide and 29” long.
