They originated in the indigenous Mayan culture of Guatemala. According to legend, the Mayan people would tell their worries to tiny dolls before they went to bed at night. They would place the dolls under their pillows and the dolls would then take their worries away while they slept, allowing them to wake up feeling refreshed and with a clearer mind.
