Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture, director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is an unflinching, cinematic masterpiece adapted from the 1853 slave narrative memoir of Solomon Northup. Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers a searing, career-defining performance as Northup, an educated, free Black man and violinist living with his family in upstate New York. In 1841, he is deceived, kidnapped, drugged, and sold into chattel slavery in Louisiana. Stripped of his name and freedom, Solomon endures twelve harrowing years under the cruelty of malevolent plantation owner Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), while forging bonds of quiet resilience with fellow captive Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o, in her Oscar-winning breakout role). Featuring an extraordinary supporting cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, and Brad Pitt.
