The koto was introduced to Japan from China (then Tang Dynasty) during the Nara period (710-794) and was originally played as an accompaniment instrument for gagaku (court music). During the Heian period (794-1185), the koto came to be used as a musical instrument by the nobility, and it appears in The Tale of Genji. Later, the Tsukushi koto genre was created by monks at a temple in Fukuoka Prefecture. Pickup in Braeside
