Nike SB's new BRSB model is not ashamed of its archival inspirations that draw mostly from the Cortez. This reverence for the past continues with this Navy and gum colourway that is conspicuously similar to the Sting runner from the late 1970s. Of course, its BRSB model name is also a pretty overt reference to Nike’s original company name of Blue Ribbon Sports. And the design is effectively a made-for-skate upgrade to the Cortez, one of the brand’s earliest designs. The runner’s distinct features, including the herringbone tread and pinked eyestay edges, are replicated on the new model. Plus, given the Sting influence, the front vamp is orange suede, meeting green nylon quarters and gum outsoles. Not to mention the big white Swoosh on the sides. With the aesthetics on point, the tech inside is also updated to survive the rigours of skating. The aforementioned gum sole is not only period correct, but also proves to be quite durable and non-marking. The insoles make full use of React foam, which is viewable in the heel windows. This is protected by tall midsole taping – an essential component of all good skate shoes.
