Navajo Sand Painting - "Whirling Logs" Motif

This is an authentic Navajo (Diné) sandpainting, a traditional Native American art form. These intricate works are created by carefully trickling fine, multicolored sands and ground minerals onto a surface. In Diné culture, these designs are traditionally created by medicine men during sacred healing ceremonies to restore balance and health, then destroyed afterward to "return the materials to the earth." The design features the sacred "Whirling Logs" (Tséyi’’ Be’ek’id) motif, depicting four stylized Yeis (protective deities) radiating from a central point, representing the rotation of the seasons, the universe, and spiritual balance. Beautifully professionally double/triple matted in a solid wood frame with hanging hardware on the back. Excellent vintage condition. Note: There is a slight crease in the matting at the bottom right-hand corner (please see photos). Overall frame size is 13.5" x 13.5". Includes the original descriptive sticker on the reverse detailing the history of the art form. Handwritten title appears to be "Wind of the Grains" (or similar), likely referring to the sacred Corn/Windway ceremony. A handwritten French dedication at the bottom reads: "Pour Pierre de Frédéric" (For Pierre from Frédéric), suggesting this was a meaningful personal gift.
