Unusual 3rd century BC Pantikapaion, Thrace, ancient Greek coin

#2011-576 in GB1. Reverse pictured first, tripod overstruck over original image. Obverse, overstrike of a bust facing right. Unusual coin to be overstruck on both sides, as well as the tab off the flan, extremely uncommon. Catalogue # SNG Cop 49v. Pantikapaion was an ancient Greek city on the eastern shore of Crimea, which the Greeks called Taurica. The city lay on the western side of the Cimmerian Bosporus, and was founded by Milesians in the late 7th or early 6th century BC, on a hill later named Mount Mithridat. Its ruins now lie in the modern city of Kerch, in Crimea, Ukraine. It was abandoned in 370 AD.
